Autumn Changes and Challenges

It’s autumn and the new season brings changes. Children are back in school and cool weather returns. Both of these events pose challenges to our clients. Their children need nutritious meals to ensure that they are successful in their studies. Yes, they are probably on a meal plan at school, but they also need nutritious meals at home too. Giving a child a healthy balanced diet ensures that they get all the essential vitamins, minerals and other nutrients needed for healthy growth and development. Helping school-age children eat a healthy diet can enhance his/her growth and optimize their development.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that few children in the U.S. consume enough nutritious foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains or limit low-nutrient fare, which can lead to malnutrition, obesity or both according to Healthy Living’s Nutrition Requirements for School Age Children.
MUM now has refrigeration and the capacity to provide nutritious food, including fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, cheese, and eggs. We have been receiving gracious food donations from Capital Area Food Bank and others, and will accept food donations from other donors. Learn here how to donate food to MUM.
While our clients are struggling to feed their children, they are also faced with potential increases in utility costs as the need for heat increases. Sometimes people on limited incomes must make hard choices when it comes to paying the rent, buying food for their families, or paying their utility bills. MUM provides financial assistance including seeking additional funding from other public agencies to help those who are struggling to pay their utility payments.
MUM is currently in the midst of its annual Fall Fundraiser, your donation will help MUM provide much needed assistance to our clients. Thank you for your support.
