Save the Date: Stamp Out Hunger on Mothers’ Day Weekend – Call for Volunteers and Donations

Stamp Out Hunger is a one-day-a-year campaign in May spearheaded by the United States Postal Service. This year, on Saturday, May 12th, postal carriers—your mailperson— will collect contributions of nonperishable food from the doorsteps of generous people, which MUM will receive for distribution to their clients in need.

Donations

In advance of the day of the donation pickup, your postal carrier will leave a postcard with information about the pickup including the date—which will be on Saturday, May 12th —and a plastic bag for your donation. All you have to do is leave your food donation outside on the Saturday. Your donation will help feed a hungry family.

MUM Needs Volunteers

After the postal carriers pick up the donations they bring them back to their local post offices where MUM volunteers pick them up and bring them to a sorting location.  MUM has always been lucky to receive a lot of donations and we need volunteers to help our board members sort, box, and store. Last year MUM was fortunate enough to have received 35,000 lbs. of food from our generous neighbors. These donations replenish MUM’s food pantry, which feeds our clients throughout the year.

Volunteering for this event is a great way to help MUM, get to know us and meet others who are committed to helping MUM help those in our community who struggle to make ends meet. For those who need community service credits for school, this is a perfect one-day event to help accomplish that. Sign up here to sign up to sort food donations on May 12 at Newport Mill Middle School, 11311 Newport Mill Rd, Kensington, MD 20895. SSL hours given to students.
